World game
There is a general perception among many baseball fans that losing the first game of a seven-game series is not a big setback, but is this fact or an unsubstantiated belief? Let’s say after the initial loss, they win the next two games to take a 2–1 lead in the series. la chargers stadium capacity Now how confident are you? Should you buy expensive champagne in anticipation of a World Series victory since you just won two in a row? Let’s hope you didn’t spend too much on the bubbly if you lived in St. Louis in October 2013, as that is exactly what happened to the Cardinals before the Red Sox won three in a row to take the World Series.

In the fifth, the Yankees committed a series of errors and defensive mistakes that allowed the Dodgers to tie the score. After a leadoff single by Kiké Hernandez, Judge committed his first error of the season, dropping a routine fly ball off the bat of Tommy Edman that put runners on first and second. Anthony Volpe then committed a throwing error while trying to throw out Hernandez at third on Will Smith’s ground ball, which loaded the bases with no outs. Cole responded by striking out Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani, but a slow ground ball from Mookie Betts resulted in an RBI infield single when first baseman Anthony Rizzo did not charge the bag after fielding the ball and Cole did not cover first base; had this play been made, the inning would have ended with no runs scored. With the Dodgers’ deficit now 5–1 and the bases still loaded, Freddie Freeman then hit a two-run single and Teoscar Hernández a two-run double, tying the game at 5–all, with all five runs unearned.

Fun fact: the 2024 New York Yankees lineup includes four players from California – #45 Gerrit Cole (who was born in California but grew up in New York); #54 Tim Hill; #99 Aaron Judge; and #27 Giancarlo Stanton. • It was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history and the second in the postseason, joining the Rangers’ Nelson Cruz in the 2011 AL Championship Series Game 2. The slam was the fifth of the postseason overall, tying ‘21 and 1998 for the most in a single postseason. The Dodgers are the 14th team with multiple grand slams in a single postseason, and they are one shy of tying the 2021 Red Sox and 1998 Braves at three for the most.
The final score — Dodgers 6, Yankees 3 — does not scream classic. It is misleading. On Friday night, the 52,394 souls lucky enough to witness Game 1 in person beheld the rare sporting event that teems with hoopla only to find it exceeded. The two most famous franchises in baseball, genuine elites of their coasts, fought. And then with one swing, on a first-pitch 93 mph fastball from Nestor Cortes, Freeman managed to deliver the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history and limp around the bases 36 years after Kirk Gibson famously did the same.
LOS ANGELES — About an hour after the closest thing to a perfect baseball game possible, Freddie Freeman stood near home plate at Dodger Stadium, where he had just ended Game 1 of the World Series with an extra-inning grand slam, and tried to explain what had just happened. Over 10 innings and 3 hours, 27 minutes, the game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees morphed from a pitchers’ duel into a hitting and baserunning clinic into strategic theater into an indelible highlight among the 120 years of World Series. Baseball at its finest comes in many forms. This game somehow managed to cram them all into one.
“I cannot believe what just happened,” Roberts said. “That’s what makes the Fall Classic a classic, right, because the stars come out and superstars make big plays, get big hits, in the biggest of moments. … I’m speechless right now.”

It actually looked like that score might hold, but then Shohei Ohtani sent a rocket to right field in the bottom of the eighth. Gleyber Torres misplayed the throw into second base and that allowed Ohtani to take third. He came home on a sac fly.
Who are the starting pitchers?Dodgers: RHP Walker Buehler (1-6, 5.38 ERA in the regular season)Buehler’s regular season didn’t go as expected once he returned from a second Tommy John surgery, but the right-hander has had a strong postseason for the Dodgers. Buehler’s final line against the Padres in NLDS Game 3 looks worse than his overall performance. He then bounced back in a pivotal Game 3 in the NLCS, tossing four scoreless innings against the Mets.
The Dodgers also announced plans to use the World Series games at Dodger Stadium to pay tribute to former pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, who died shortly before the 2024 World Series and who was vital to the team’s 1981 championship season.
The Dodgers, who previously were based in Brooklyn, moving to Los Angeles in 1958, faced the Yankees for the first time in 1941 — and lost. The last battle against the Yanks was in 1981, where they took home the win.
Yankees: Juan Soto homered and had two hits in Game 2. Of his four homers this postseason, three have given the Yankees the lead, and one has tied the game.
